Ready to trade beach lounging for full-on adventure mode? This epic eco tour in Bocas del Toro takes you deep into the jungle and underground into the famous bat caves of Bahía Honda. Along the way, cruise through mangroves, spot sloths hanging out in the trees, and hike through lush rainforest before exploring a hidden cave system filled with bats, rock formations, and a secret waterfall pool. Add in a stop for some top-notch snorkeling, and you’ve got one seriously unforgettable day.
Guided Tour of Nivida Bat Cave in Bastimentos National Park
The adventure starts with a scenic boat ride through the winding mangroves of Bahía Honda—keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, sloths, and maybe even monkeys along the way. Once you arrive, you’ll meet your local guide and set off on a short jungle hike (about 20 minutes), where the wildlife sightings continue. Think sloths lazily draped over branches, tiny frogs tucked into the foliage, and that wild, untouched jungle feel Bocas is known for.
Then it’s time to go underground.
Headlamps on, you’ll enter the Nivida Bat Cave and begin wading through cool, dark water—ranging from ankle to chest deep depending on your height. Inside, the cave opens up into a massive cavern filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and thousands of bats resting overhead. Your guide will share insights into the different species living here and their vital role in the ecosystem (yes, bats are the unsung heroes of the jungle).
As you venture deeper, you’ll pass through narrow tunnels and emerge at a hidden pool with a small waterfall tucked inside the cave—a surreal moment that feels straight out of a movie.
As a bonus, you’ll also have the chance to visit a small Ngäbe indigenous community nearby, where you can purchase handmade crafts or grab a simple snack—supporting the local families who help protect and maintain this special place.
Snorkeling Hospital Point at Isla Solarte
After all that adrenaline, it’s time to cool off in the Caribbean. Your final stop is Isla Solarte, home to one of Bocas del Toro’s best snorkeling spots—Hospital Point. Known for its calm, clear waters and easy access from shore, this protected cove offers excellent visibility and a vibrant underwater world.
Snorkel along coral formations in shallow to moderate depths, where you’ll spot colorful reef fish, sponges, and healthy coral structures. It’s a relaxed but rewarding snorkel—perfect for unwinding after your cave adventure while still keeping the exploration going.
